The Breast Lift is a procedure done for breasts that have lost volume and have started to sag. This is often seen after patients have had children or have lost significant weight. Although most of my patients are women, I do see some men who have had massive weight loss after gastric bypass surgery and have redundant tissue on their chests. My female patients will often desire a breast augmentation at the same time as the lift in order to regain some of the lost volume.

I try to perform most of my procedures with the smallest incisions possible. For this reason, I often do a Benelli technique which was developed in Brazil. This involves an incision around the areola only with dissection of the skin off of the underlying breast tissue, reshaping the breast mound and redraping the skin. It tends to cause puckering around the edges of the areola but this usually resolves, leaving a nice flat scar. There are some times when a vertical incision is also needed giving a "lollipop" shaped scar. These scars fade nicely and my patients are quite happy with the overall appearance.

In some situations a breast augmentation alone will compensate for a small amount of sagging or ptosis. If the sagging is significant (the nipple is below the level of the inframmary crease), a mastopexy or breast lift will also be advised. These are usually done at the same time as the breast augmentation.

The simplest breast lifts are limited to an incision around the areola. The incision also includes a vertical component if there is more skin laxity and in the most ptotic breasts, the lift includes an incision along the inframmary crease.

In 25 years of practice performing over 3,000 breast augmentations and lifts, my experience will help you to make the right choice. This includes which type of implant to choose. Presently in our practice, 60%-70% of patients are choosing silicone gel implants over saline. They have a softer feel and less incidence of rippling.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Breast Lift?:

One or more of the following feelings or conditions may indicate that you are a good candidate for a breast lift:

Breasts that are pendulous, but of satisfactory size

Breasts that lack substance or firmness

Nipples and areolas that point downward, especially if they are positioned below the breast crease

Sometimes these conditions may be inherited traits. In certain cases, the breasts may have developed differently so that one breast is firm and well positioned while the other is not. There may be differences in the size of your breasts as well as their shape. Breasts that are large and heavy can be lifted, but the results may not be as long-lasting as when the procedure is done on smaller breasts.

A breast lift can be performed at any age, but plastic surgeons usually recommend waiting until breast development has stopped. Pregnancy and breast-feeding may have significant and unpredictable effects on the size and shape of your breasts. Nevertheless, many women decide to undergo breast lift surgery before having children and feel that they can address any subsequent changes later. Since the milk ducts and nipples are left intact, breast lift surgery usually will not affect your ability to breast-feed; however, you should discuss this with your plastic surgeon.

"Breast Augmentation through implants and/or a breast lift is also very popular among women seeking to re-proportion or balance their figures. Proper selection of the size, shape, and placement of the implant produces the most natural result, which looks best in my opinion. About 25 percent of our breast augmentation patients also undergo a mastoplexy, or breast lift, if there is significant sagging of the tissue. A breast lift can also be used to raise the breast without implants"
