What Is Liposuction?
Liposuction is the extraction of fat from the body via a vacuum process and is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures in the world. Liposuction involves the use of a thin tube called a cannula that is inserted into the body to break up and suction out fat.
The Advanced Plastic Surgery Centre, led by board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Joseph Perlman has performed liposuction on hundreds of men and women in Houston and the surrounding areas in Texas.
Why Should I Consider Liposuction?
Liposuction effectively targets stubborn fatty deposits that are resistant to diet and exercise, resulting in improved body contours in specific areas. Compared to traditional plastic surgery, liposuction is a less invasive, cost-effective, and safer option with a shorter recovery period. The procedure delivers natural-looking, long-term results by removing excess fat, enhancing body contours, and achieving a more sculpted appearance. Additionally, liposuction can be combined with other procedures to address residual fatty pockets after a body lift, tummy tuck, or other surgical interventions.
What Types of Options are Available for Liposuction?
At The Advanced Plastic Surgery Centre, you can choose from two different types of liposuction:
1. VASER® Lipo utilizes minimally invasive ultrasound technology called LipoSelection, which selectively breaks apart fatty deposits using ultrasound waves. The fat cells are then gently extracted through a cannula.
2. Smart Lipo® involves a calibrated laser that liquefies fatty deposits before suctioning the fat away. The laser treatment is applied via a device on the top layer of the skin, ensuring a more precise application and minimal trauma to surrounding tissues.
Am I a Good Candidate for Liposuction?
Liposuction is generally suitable for most healthy adults in good overall condition. However, in some cases, combining liposuction with another cosmetic procedure may be necessary. The best candidates for liposuction are individuals who lead active lifestyles, engage in regular exercise, maintain a healthy diet, and are close to their ideal weight. They may have noticed stubborn fatty deposits in areas like the waistline, which can be effectively eliminated with liposuction, enhancing the overall contour and appearance of an otherwise slim and toned body.
Recovery After Liposuction
Compared to surgery, liposuction is a less invasive procedure, leading to a shorter recovery time and less intensive after-care. Typically, around one week after the liposuction procedure, the treated area’s swelling will peak and gradually start to reduce. At this stage, stitches are usually removed, and most patients can comfortably resume non-strenuous work and daily activities. Over the following weeks, any slight bruising from the procedure will fade and vanish. Additionally, areas that may have felt numb will regain normal sensation, allowing patients to resume normal activities and gradually increase exercise as the swelling continues to subside.
Can Liposuction Eliminate Cellulite?
Liposuction is not intended to address cellulite as cellulite is a skin condition characterized by dimpling, and liposuction does not improve skin quality. However, it is interesting to note that some liposuction patients have reported noticing a reduction in cellulite.
For effectively eliminating cellulite from the skin, the current procedure of choice is endermology. Endermology involves a specialized treatment that uses a combination of sucking and rolling massage therapy. Multiple treatments are typically required, and regular maintenance sessions are necessary to sustain the results.
How Does Abdominal Liposuction Different From A Tummy Tuck?
Both the tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) and liposuction procedures target fatty deposits in the abdomen area, but they differ significantly in complexity and scope. The tummy tuck is a comprehensive surgical procedure that involves not only the removal of fatty deposits but also the tightening of weakened muscles and the elimination of loose and sagging skin.
On the other hand, liposuction is a less invasive procedure with a shorter recovery period and fewer complications since it does not require surgery or anesthesia. However, it’s important to note that liposuction alone cannot address all the issues that a tummy tuck can. In some cases, Dr. Perlman may recommend combining both procedures to achieve the best possible results, providing patients with a leaner and more contoured silhouette that appears more youthful.
